The next section of the paper shall deal with community bonding and the role of motherhood as observed through generations of African American women. The following section shall delve into the cultural aspects and her attempts at protecting them in the wake of the commercialisation and globalisation ruling American society. In the section on biological motherhood, the paper shall focus on the Blanche’s personal life and her acting as a foster mother to her sister’s children, Malik and Taifa. This paper shall look into different aspects of motherhood biological motherhood, cultural motherhood, community motherhood and universal motherhood. Through these mystery novels, Neely introduces us to her protagonist, Blanche White, who takes up household duties within white families in the United States to sustain herself and her children. Neely wrote four mystery novels, Blanche on the Lam (1992), Blanche Among the Talented Tenth (1994), Blanche Cleans Up (1998) and Blanche Passes Go (2000). Through the course of this paper, I shall be looking at the concept of motherhood in the mystery novels of the African American writer, Barbara Neely.
